Hey guys

I'm looking into the possibilities of starting a business - I won't bore you with the details, but I need faster internet and the area I'm located in hasn't got cable. "Normal" broadband tops out at 8/16mb, but I need more like 100mbps.

Is there any way to get faster internet speeds without relocating? I can't believe that no business in my area runs on a line faster than 16mbps... how do hosting companies etc get their bandwidth? Is it literally a case of you move the business to where the internet connections are?

Hosting companies host in data centres which (usually) have several connectivity options and hence more bandwidth than you can shake a small stick at.

DSL and Cable is consumer grade internet connectivity with contention etc etc.

They are not aimed at businesses who require a line to operate. You need a leased line.

^THAT is exactly what they actually do. Infact they go a step further and usually move their servers into a datacentre where they have the highest desnity fo high speed connections in the country :) Or in some cases people even move their servers to datacentres in Germany or Sweeden because the bandwidth costs are sometimes cheaper.

Just because you own something doesn't mean you have to run it from your office. Quite a lot of companies are hosting services in datacentres and connecting to it remotely using lightweight methods like HTTPS, citrix, terminal services. Such technologies don't require fast connections at the premesis and allow access from anywhere. It's easy tos ecure with VPNs etc and hands off because DR and business continuity can often be handled for you.

Look at it in the universal language of money, go google how much a hosted server costs to rent with a gigabit connection and a reasonable chunk of bandwith, probably no more than a couple of hundred per month on 12month contracts, very little initial outlay.
Then look at the cost of installing gigabit WAN to your office. Even in central london where there's fibre all over the show, it costs over £5000 to get the fibre installed to the building, then you're looking at £10-12 thousand /year rental for 100meg, double that for gigabit. Usually on a 36month contract. Before you've even bought any tin boxes or software licenses.
<£5000 versus >£20000 per year, no brainer really.
