My PC cant connect to the internet anymore, when I look in internet options the lan menu is set to use a proxy server IP points to 127.0.0.1.
I can deselect the proxy setting and my connection works again but each time the pc starts this proxy is reselected and i have to disable it again.

I've scanned for virus/malware and nothings come up, any ideas on a perminant fix?

What happens if you open up a command prompt and type:
telnet 127.0.0.1 5555

if you don't have telnet installed, and are on vista/windows 7 try following this.

I've tried IE8, Firefox and opera, non of them connect (they all do after I disable the proxy). I just can't get rid of the proxy setting perminantly, its back after each restart.

Run Malware Bytes + MS Security Essentials. My two favourites. This happened to my Dad's lappy, some virus/malware changes his proxy settings and he couldn't connect to tinter.

Whats the OS?

Go in and check the local security policy.

Proxy setting should be in there

gpedit.msc

User config - windows settings - internet explorer - proxy

Is it in there?

No we don't have an IT dept and this pc is for web use. I think one of my co-workers was attempting to download video's from where he shouldn't and down loaded something worse, he wont admit it. Would make things easier if he'd just tell me where he'd been. (he wouldn't be in trouble with work)

This would only affect IE, but worth a check nontheless.

My malware alarms would be ringing a little at this point. If it's a managed laptop just hand it to your IT department.
