Internet but no dial tone??

Morning all,

Got an ongoing issue with Sky at the minute.

I have internet access but no dial tone on the phone line. I disconnected everything and plugged a known good phone into the master socket (no filters, just the phone) and nothing. Completely dead. Plug the router back in and I get internet access, although slower than normal.

When I call the landline number from a mobile I get a messaging service saying someone is on the line. This has been going on for over a week now and Sky have sent one response about sending an Engineer out who will bill me if I'm not in or if the fault is in my house. Apparently there isn't a problem with the line test or the exchange!

Anyone come across this problem before and what was the fix?

Could be the master socket at fault.

Before ordering an engineer's visit at great expense check the following:

-Your test phone definitely works correctly (test at a different property)
-Your filters are working properly (cheap enough to replace with good Xf1e's)

But tbh it sounds like the master socket.

NDT but still DSL syn means your functioning on one leg (one wire out of two)

Most common fault would be 1 leg disconnection but a basic line test would discover that since it would only get one tone back.

Also, the line test ok only means that the voltage on the line is normal and it can detect a capacitor (a master socket, old or new, is detected on the line)

If you have tried another handset (ask your neighbor), preferably a phone that does not need a power supply to function (non wireless :) ), but either will do, then you know that if the line tests ok, there is NDT and the internet is working but slower, you have a high resistance disconnection on your line.

HR is a general term for all kinds of situations where the line is about to break (damage, corrosion ect) somewhere and requires retermination.

Sounds like sky booked you an appointment aka Openreach will show up between 8-12 or 1-5. They are supposed to call you, but may not call you till they are at the site.

If they have a LTOK fault at this time it would be a Conscious Decision To Appoint, they warn you of charges and book a job, so the openreach engineer should arrive, ask where your master socket is.

If they say its not the master socket, show them where any sockets you know of are, or they will look outside for where the overhead or underground telephone line comes in. When they find the first socket in the premises this is your master socket.

They will plug in a phone and test for voltage, then they will test for dial tone, if they do not get one then they will start fixing it for you.

Hope this helps

Same thing happened to me before moving to fibre. I was working on one leg and had no dial tone but a 3mbit dsl ... Only realised the week I was getting fibre installed as never used the phone.

Installed fibre & fixed phone line, all running sweet.

Hi All,

Thanks for the info.

I've tried 2 previosuly working phones directly into the master socket with no dial tone. I plan to take it to another property to make sure.

The broadband is at 1.66 mbps. Was at 2 although promised at least 4 by Sky when I signed up!

The Sky box isn't plugged into the phone line.

Managed to get hold of a Sky agent today who says their system is showing an internal fault. I've explained 3 times so far what I've done to 3 different people. 12 days later and still no progress!

I'm surprised DSL can function on 1 leg. How does it get the return circuit?

My father had this over Christmas, apart from you could dial his number and it would just ring without the phone in his house ringing rather than the engaged tone you are getting. Got an engineer out and one of the connections was corroded in one of the junction boxes before it got to the house. Engineer fixed things in about 10 minutes and everything was back to normal.

DSL will work fine over 1 wire at a reduced rate. If you are 100% sure you've tried everything and the fault is external to your premises (BT line checks etc. came back fine on my father's line, but there was no dial tone at all in the house, but the dsl still worked) get the engineer booked

I can't believe how bad their customer service is! I left NTL as theirs was so poor!

I'm waiting confirmation for an Engineer now, although they still insist there is a fault in my house wiring. Strange when the same fault is there when directly plugged into the master socket.

I'm convinced I'd get more sense out of talking to a brick wall....

Well, after 3 weeks it's fixed! Turned out to be a short in a box somewhere down the road. Asked for compensation, I'm not holding my breath!
