I am moving house and would like to do some research into the best ISP in the area. Both Virgin and BT are available but just wondered if there is any way to check if there is any issues in the area with either.

The only practical option is getting onto the ISP's support forum and searching for issues based on your postcode.

Is there a general consensus to which is better these days? Virgin or BT and its resellers?

I've had both in the past, remember getting a 5ms ping back in the NTL days on a 300k cable connection. Currently using BT infinity which is ok but occasionally spikes.

anyone in the West Byfleet area have any pointers?

I had a horrible year with Virgin once where they were hopelessly behind the demand.

But then that was one property, one year, and to their credit at the end of the year it was fixed. I doubt you'll get too much specific info, but I haven't heard many complaints about Infinity yet.

I went through the same thing with virgin media back when 30mb was their top package. I guess its all dependant on the area in question. I'm hearing good things about Plusnet might give them a shout.

I also see VM have removed their traffic management for downloading, that's tempting!
