Folks, got a small problem (which is escalating as tempers rise) in the house at the moment and struggling to think what the problem is and/or a solution.

Currently have AOL as an ISP with a 4Mbit connection which goes into a D-Link DSL G604T router.

There are currently 4 devices attached to it via wireless:

1 x Laptop running Windows 7
2 x Laptop running Vista Home Premium
1 x Laptop running Windows XP Professional

There is also:

1 x Desktop running Windows XP Professional
1 x Xbox360
1 x PS3
1 x iPod Touch

The ONLY items using a wired connection are the desktop and Xbox360.

More often than not, if there's a lot of traffic going through the router (like downloads!!) the router just stops and everyone loses connection. The only way to get back on is to turn off the router and back on again.

Yes I'll admit, 2 of the users are using P2P software to download stuff, and I've tried setting the maximum download speed of the app (uTorrent) to not download more than 400Kbps.

What bothers me is that I'll be in this house full time from next week and 50% of the time I'll be required to work from home, really can't be having the internet going down because of heavy traffic (it does still go down every now and then, even if there's no downloads).

It seems as if the more traffic there is, the router just stops dead.

I'll be bringing my own router this week (NetGear 834G) so don't know if this will rectify the problem, but if it doesn't, then I'm going to be in a bit of a situation of having a router that frequently packs in on me.

Any thoughts on what the problem could be and/or how to rectify it?

Dlink router have issues with high numbers of connections, the usual advice is limit your p2p connections to 200 (total) with is both impractical and virtually useless. Then again, that is quite an old router and probably wasn't designed for that level of workload. If you're trying a dg834gt use a 02.16 firmware, it's the most stable with the least issues.

If you need something that's totally reliable then consider a wrt54gl loaded with tomato, there are people who've had up-times in excess of 300 days (because they didn't flash to a newer version). Changing the contract values to something like; 90, 1800, 30, 30, 30, 30, 10, 30, 15, 60, 15, 30 will pretty much guarantee no torrent issues.
