Internet Connection fubared

Hi,

The missus has got an iMac (couple of years old now). Recently she had to upgrade the OS to Leopard as she got an iPhone and it insisted that she upgrade the OS before it would work with iTunes.

So anyway, she bought Leopard and upgraded the OS. Now since she has done this, the internet connection has ground to a halt. It just about still works, but is the equivalent of trying to use the internet with loads of torrents downloading eg excruciatingly slow.

The internet itself is fine (BeThere running @ c. 10mb which I use with my own PC all the time and it works fine).

I never use Macs, so don't really know where to start to fix the problem. Anyone got any advise as to how I can diagnose and fix the problem?

Any help would be much appreciated,

Cheers,

Fred

I wasn't aware the iPhone needed 10.5 to work, I was under the impression you just needed iTunes 7.5+ :o

Try a different browser than Safari. Try Safari in a new user - to see if the settings are fubared for just your lady's user.

Try changing your DNS to open DNS
https://www.opendns.com/start?device=apple-osx-leopard

Type "dscacheutil -flushcache" at a terminal window, this fixes this issue for some.

Disable IPv6 in the Network settings.

Update your Router firmware.

Pretty much scattergun... I am afriad.

Running the terminal command and switching to Safari (she was using Firefox) seems to have done the trick.

Am reinstalling Firefox to see if that will get Firefox working again.

Cheers for the advice :)

Hmm...might have spoken too soon. Just ran a speedtest and it is rated at 1mb. Same test (zdnet) on this laptop rates 8mb.

OK so browser is not the problem, nor is the flushcache.

Router firmware's up to date as well.

Will try disabling ipv6...

How is the mac connected to the Internet?

Wireless connection to BeThere 8mb broadband connection. DG834G router. The iMac uses an Airport Extreme wireless card.

Worked fine for ages but ever since the leopard upgrade it has been running at sub-dialup speeds. Virtually unusable.

OK I tried disabling ipv6 and the speedtest is now showing 256kb!

Ok only option left is to change to open DNS.

Will give that a try now...

Haven't tried ethernet yet. The iMac's quite heavy and I can't be bothered to haul it over to the router.

I've been digging about in the apple forums and it sounds like a lot of people are having wireless problems following the 10.5.2 update.

Well I'm all out ideas here :(

Yeah I'm pretty sure it is Airport related as there are about a zillion posts in mac forums about leopard update screwing up airport wireless cards.

Will try ethernet out tomorrow and report back.

As an epilogue, downloaded an autoupdate for the mac titled "Airport driver fix" and this has fixed the problem with slow internet due to leopard upgrade.

So all sorted now :)
