Internet connection - Homeplug?

Hi, earlier in the year i built my own gaming rig, i love it but one thing bugs me - The internet connection. My wireless connection keeps disconnecting as its out of reach.

If it wasn't for the other 4 computers and 1 Xbox which uses the router id get rid of it and buy a homeplug for myself. My question is, can i have a homeplug but still keep the router so it can be used by everyone else?

Also, which homeplug is best for a 4mb internet connection?

Yes you can do that. I have the wireless router plugged into the homeplug. I can use any wireless device I like and then have one xbox 360 on wireless and one on a homeplug. A desktop PC is also on a homeplug.

I bought the solwise 85meg homeplugs but they are all good. Just dont buy a 14 meg plug. 80 or more for decent transfer rates.

Ah cool, thats nice to hear.

But what do you mean by that it the router plugs into the homeplug?

It would be connected like this (as mine is at the moment):

Internet -> Router -> Homeplug <(Building power cables)> Homeplug -> Your PC

The Homeplugs have an ethernet connection that you simply just plug into one of the wired ports on your router as you would any other network device, then you put another one where your PC is and connect the computer to the ethernet socket on that.

I'm using the Solwise 200Mbit rated plugs here, very happy with them and see performance of around 45Mbit/sec effective throughput.

EDIT -

Just seen you said 4 computers and an Xbox, does that mean you have used up all the wired ports on the router? If so just buy a cheap switch and put that into one of the ports on the router to give you more sockets, you can get a 5port one for under £30.

Our broadband goes from the modem to the router and then from the router its wired to the desktop PC. Thats my setup leaving 3 spare ports in the router. Would i simply plug a homeplug into one of those? (On virgin media)

For Homeplug to work you need at least two Homeplugs, one to connect into a port on the router so that the powerlines in your house are physically connected to the rest of your network.

You then need another Homeplug for any deives you want to connet to the network, these plug into the mains sockets in your house and then have an ethernet connection into your PC/Laptop/Xbox etc.

Yeah i know i need two, i think you have answered my question about where to plug the homeplug on the desktop pc (where the router is). I plug it in the router then the other homeplug in my computer in my room.

When you say twin do you mean one that will allow you to connect more than one device to it, or a twin pack? :)

And by twin pack i mean so that i have one for the router and one for the pc where i want the internet.
 
Well Solwise 85Mbit/sec rated plugs can be purchased in pairs for £50 and providing you don't want to copy large files around they would be more than adequate for your needs.
