Internet Connection Sharing Problem

Hi,

Sorry about the vagueness of the question but I'm hoping that this will be one of those frequently asked questions with a real simple answer!

Trying to connect an Xbox 360 to a Wi-Fi enabled laptop via ethernet, for Xbox Live.

I don't believe this has anything directly related to the problem but thought background was good.

The first thing I'm trying to do is enable ICS on the Wi-Fi network connection. When I try and do this I get an error along the lines of it is has not been possible as the required IP is not available... Something like that.

From my vague knowledge of networks I believe (?) ICS uses 192.168.0.1 - The problem is that their wireless router is set to 192.168.0.1

I tried changing that to 192.168.0.28 (Just something out of the way for the time being) and it did not work - Though it is likely that I did not do this correctly - Infact, once changed the Wi-Fi would not even work with internet (But I could still access it's control panel through 192.168.0.28

Could anybody please give any details how I can enable ICS on this? There are a variety of other machines that access this network and so I would rather not mess with it too much - Mess simply with the laptop if possible. Note: Currently all connections are set to "Automatic" (Eg, IP settings et al).

If I've missed anything that is blatently required to you network guys then let me know and I'll give as much detail as I can remember (Not at the location now).

Cheers.

Hi there,

That certainly sounds easier - Not familiar with home networking as I'm sure you can tell (Only just finally now understanding the home wireless network I have here that was originally set up by somebody else - It's all a learning process though, eh? :) ).

Could you give any other instructions on how to set this up then, please? As detailed as possible. When I next attempt to help set this up I wont really be wanting to be spending time "fiddling" (The person I'm helping just wants it doing "if it's easy and possible" but not if it's any hassel)... So any quick instructions I can follow would be brilliant... Including, do I need to alter XBox settings... Or leave it on "Automatic"... Do I need to change any settings on either of network cards (LAN or Wireless)... Currently, for example, the wireless appears to have a slight problem in that it doesn't seem to connect properly... I think I fixed this the other night by altering it's IP manually (From automatic) - Though would this rectify itself when "bridging" connections?

Any help *really* appreiciated.

Cheers.

you shouldn't have to do a thing provided your router is dishing out ips via dhcp. just set both the connections to automatic. highlight them both, select bridge. reboot and hopefully, the laptop and xbox will pick up the ip settings they need. :)
