Ok so ive been able to happily connect wirelessly to my router flawlessly for years. However, over the last few weeks evertime i turn my computer on, it couldnt acquire a network addres and assigned the usual 169.xxx.xxx...e.t.c.

I found for a few days that if i simply unplugged my wireless reciever and plugged another one in (different mac address) it would then connect and everything would be fine until i turned the computer off and then on again.

Now though it is refusing to acquire a network address most of the time

I know my way around a computer and have tried all the usual stuff - modem reset, manual ip config, a multitude of settings e.t.c.

The computer downstairs that is connected to the router by lan is perfectly fine and can connect to the internet no problems.

I really am at a loss now and i need a computer genius to save me!

Update * When i manually configure the ipsettings for teh wireless connection it does sometimes work but then equally it seems to cut out eventually

If a different wireless card is still causing the same issues, then the dreaded reformat could be the best and time saving cure. I have had that problem when repairing systems for people especially laptops and its normally down to some sort of unknown network issue with windows.

Can I ask if your encrytion is on or off and if on, try connecting with the routers encrytion turned off.

well thats what i am trying at the moment. It connects if i configure the ip address manually and has been going good for a while now. I will have to wait and see.

Also, its the same make wireless card, just a differnet mac address.

Ok. so it seems to be fine when there is no wireless security enabled?

Why would this be?

After trawling all night looking for an answer i found it.....

Some guy said he fixed it buy changing around all his usb devices into different ports after buying an ipod shuffle. After that it worked fine.

So I tried that....and viola it connected first time. ridiculous

Can anyone explain why this happens/happened?

Its to do with the driver. I know in vista if you plugged the usb mouse out etc and put it in another port, vista would install the driver again for use with that port. Its like the there is a clitch with the driver software.

In XP, swapping ports doesn't work all the time even uninstalling and reinstalling the driver never fixes it hence why often go for the reformat in xp.

Glad you got it working and if its XP you are one lucky boy.
