Internet disconnects when downloading

Hi guys, I have a problem.

I'm using a dg834gt netgear router, which is plugged into the computer downstairs, and I connect to it with a usb wireless dongle thingy.

When i'm download, after anywhere inbetween 5mins and 1hr, my internet disconnects, and if I don't pull the dongle out of my usb and replug it within about 10 seconds, my pc locks up and requires a restart. I'm with Demon

If theres any tests I can do to help narrow down the problem, please let me know.

you say that the internet connection keeps dropping when you start to download. is it that the pc is losing it's connection or is the router actualy dropping the internet link?

if its the pc, and your having to remove the usb dongle to prevent it locking up, i'd try a different wireless card/dongle or wire it to the router to rule it out.

Ok i'll give that a try later on, might be another one lying about somewhere. Yes it's just my pc, my sister/dad doesn't lose connection.

If anyone else has some other suggestions ill try them too

Hi sorry to hijack, have the same problem with virgin media at the moment 4mb connection, all was working ok until i started using a ETHERNET CABLE instead of a USB one from the NTL box to the computer after an hour like:

starting to think it might be Virgin pulling a fast one with Connections i dont know though as im not an expert in this field, sorry to hijack.

I used to have this and it was the VIA chipset. Whats the motherboard, etc

It's an Asus p5n-e SLI.

Nevermind that then I have the same and its fine. The old common ring wire on the phone sockets caused a lot of dsl disconnects for me

What is the make and model of the USB dongle ?

If it works fine via ethernet then uninstalled the drivers for the dongle and reinstalled them if not try that. Finally try and different USB port.
