Internet downloads suddenly gone slow

A friend gave me his old netgear router (not a modem/router) to act as a switch on the home network I am trying to set up.
I disabled all of the clever features on the router so it acted just as a switch, and it worked ok. As far as I am aware though I did not change any settings on my netgear DG834GT modem router.

Torrent downloads are now going 30k/s instead of 300k/s. I have tried a nearby friends internet and his is fast and I have tried another computer on my network and that is still slow.

The switch is no longer connected, I am just plugged straight into the modem/router now. Regular downloads are stil 350k/s. I have looked through the settings on my modem/router many times and cannot find anything wrong that I know of, but then half the settings I don't know what they do.

Any ideas?

Set up a DMZ on the router and associate it to your computers IP address and see if your speeds get better.

Just had a go and didn't make a difference unfortunately. Until I used the other router as a switch my torrent speeds have always been fine, however when trying out the switch I am certain I didn't change a single setting on yon the modem/router.
