Internet Explorer / MSN refusing to work

I've been having problems with I.E. and MSN for a while now, it seems to come in waves where they both refuse point blank to work for a couple of months, then all of a sudden I'll be able log on/get I.E. loading for a week or so, then back to the same old. I had similar issues (only with MSN) back on XP and created a batch file to re-assign the DLLs required (it seemed a common issue and 1 run fixed the problem for me and everyone I know who tried it), however this isn't the case on Vista.

My firewall isn't affecting it for starters, the only way when it starts playing up to get it working again is to reset the I.E. settings to factory, and restart the PC, and even then its hit or miss, the exact same thing is happening to me now which is stopping me reading my e-mails (Hotmail/Live has poor support for Opera). I'm having no problems on XP, so again its not a hardware firewall issue. Opera and everything else is working fine, my accounts aren't down because I can use my iPhone. I'm really at my wits end now and NOTHING I've found online seems to help

So, if anyone can help me fix this mess I'll love you eternally.

Have you ran any virus, spyware/malware scans?

If you haven't, uninstall (or disable) your current AV, and install the NOD32 Trial and scan. Also get "Malware Bytes" - very easy to use, and good anti-spyware on-demand scanner. Might be some malaware/spyware causing some issues - seeing as you need to reset the IE options.

Hope this helps.

You don't need to uninstall your current AV and install a trial just to use a particular engine. Most of the big name AV providers have free online scanners, including NOD32. You can find that here. NOD32's not really the best detection engine out there by quite a margin, though, despite its popularity.

MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware are both excellent though, and a deep/thorough scan with either or both of those should assuage any concerns you might have.

I had been using AVG and have since decided its a tun of crap, 2 seconds into a scan MalwareBytes found 3 virii  hopefully this will fix the issues, even though what was picked up seemed to be on other drives and not the C:/
