Microsoft has confirmed that it is running versions of post-Internet Explorer 7 inhouse. Bruce Morgan - a Software Development Manager, IE Team and responsible with leading the Vista RSS
platform, IE UX, and IE setup teams at Microsoft, revealed in a thread over at Microsoft's Channel 9 that Internet Explorer has moved into the next stage.

Morgan however claims that there is little truth to the speculations surrounding Internet Explorer as the rumors deliver only a minimal amount of information. “While they're not flat out wrong, they're not right, either. That's because they don't really say anything at all. Some of these writers should run for public office - they know how to go on and on without actually saying a word, but leaving you thinking they did. I had a manager like that once, but I digress...” commented Morgan.

However, the speculations related to Microsoft testing an alpha version of Internet Explorer 8.0 are true, although Morgan does not refer specifically to the 8.0 build of IE, but rather to builds of the upcoming versions of the browser.

“We have post-IE7 daily builds running, of course, because that's part of our engineering processes. We're working on improving those processes as well as doing planning for the next version. So sure, people have builds. That's no big thing - certainly nothing anyone would label "an alpha",” Morgan stated.

To translate Morgan's words into a conclusion, yes, Microsoft is dogfooding new builds of Internet Explorer that are positioned post-IE7 development wise, but not an alpha variant of IE 8.0. Internet Explorer 8.0 will be showcased at MIX 07, at the Venitian Hotel in Las Vegas between April 30 and May 2.

This is good news, however I do wonder what IE8.0 would bring.

I expect it to not be ready for a good while yet, maybe a 7.1 release with some small tweaks first?

I'm not amused at all by the 2009 delivery date. That is way way too long. If anything they should be looking to release something new Q4 this year. Microsoft really need to step away from long release cycles if they want to remain competitive and agile.

Here Here ! 100% Agreement ! why are they like this a top $$ company ,its the same with x64 ,there just not pushing things enough in my eyes .

I'm not sure I agree. Most users and most companies only upgrade or change software very occassionally - they don't expect new features or fixes (except for security problems) more than very occassionally - after all, most people feel threatened by updates and new versions! For 95% of Internet Explorer 7 users, is there really any serious problem that needs fixing immediately? If you're desperate for constant updates and standards adherance, Internet Explorer probably isn't for you, but otherwise it doesn't seem like much of a problem. I'm more pleased that future versions are being developed at all - much better than completely abandoning IE for years as they did after Internet Explorer 6 (which itself was very little more than IE 5).

While Mozilla and Opera don't really have to answer the corporate market much, Microsoft certainly do - it's where their priorities rightly lie - and that is the reason sub-products such as IE and WMP aren't released more often. It's just more to manage and adapt for on the enterprise environment.

It makes all our jobs easier, and only at the expense of a bit of shine ;)
