I am taking a look at my sisters PC- she knows littereally nothing about computers- she has been complaining that she cant get onto Hotmail. but on closer inspection there are loads of sites that will not load up properly. (java update site and microsoft update site included). they just show blank screens or say page cannot be displayed etc.

When i had a look at the PC it seems that the Gfx card drivers had been removed and then i found that the CPU to AGP (4in1) drivers had been removed. I dont know whats ben going on.

I have now run the virus checker and ad-aware and reinstalled all the drivers but still cannot get internet explorer to work properly. I assume that something has been removed that was needed for it to work properly!?

I cannot find the original windows disk to do a repair.

anyone have any ideas of what to try next?

Cheers

Pete

Post the contents of c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (open with notepad)

and the results of (from a command prompt):
ipconfig /all (primarily the DNS servers it lists).

127.0.0.1 localhost

ipconfig /all DNS Server: 10.0.0.2

By the way its not a connectivity issue as i am able to access some websites (such as this one)

Is 10.0.0.2 a machine on your network, or a router?

I understand it's not a connectivity issue, I'm trying to figure out if your DNS is being hijacked (effectively a rogue software changing your request to go to www.windowsupdate.com into a blank page, or redirecting where your on-line banking goes to steal your paswords).

just got home so no longer have access to the machine.

I tried to install internet explorer 8 but it failed- it said to see the troubleshoot page but that is also not accessible due to the problem.

Pho

im pretty sure that 10.0.0.2 is the router.
