Internet fast on on laptop but slow on PC?

I've recently moved into a new flat with built in 30Mb wifi internet connection.
I am able to get full speed on my laptop but on my PC I barely get speeds of upto 5Mbs even though I have 4 bars which says good signal. Occasionally the signal drops on both PC and laptop.
Both laptop and PC are in the same room. The router and modem are 2 rooms away, about 15 feet, which I don't have acces to.
My PC isn't WiFi so I'm using an Edimax HiGain Wifi Adapter. Could this be the issue? If so, what can I do to improve my signal?

Bit of a long shot but have you tried the latest Edimax drivers?

This. If not then it's just a poor wireless adapter.

If it is Wi-Fi 802.11N/B/G I don't see there will be a major decrease unless the obvious 2 posters giving you the information to update the driver for the wireless card. I agree with them too, update and post back.
