Hey, I'm in a house at university with a netgear wireless router.

I have a laptop with built in 54G and a desktop with a netgear wireless USB adaptor, the WG111T USB stick model.

I left uni before easter and they were both working fine, I had to get a friend to kick my door down to get a file off my pc whilst I was away, but he can't have done anything much whilst he was in here. Although my room was used as a common room by the cretens that frequent here, but I doubt many of them know enough about computers to break one..

I am back at uni now, and the internet on my pc does NOT work, but the laptop still does.

My friend who is the only person here who knows more than me about computers but who's I am still suspicious of was laying around with ipconfig trying to get it to work.

Tried reinstalling drivers for the USB stick model and all sorts. It establishes a connection with the router and is exchanging packets, but no sites load! Any ideas?

Just checked and they are - what about configuration scripts in internet explorer? Tried with both automatic and all boxes unticked, but neither worked. Which should I leave it on?

Any more ideas?

I don't know, the router is downstairs and there is no way I'm taking apart my pc with it's ridiculous amount of things plugged in to take it downstairs and check!

Going to borrow a mates USB internet stick to check later tonight..

Ok I have just installed my friends USB stick and it STILL doesn't work.

Definitely a problem with my pc now..

Where can I start?! I have already uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, I really need to get this working though!

Ahh I just installed firefox and it works! This is good, but I still need to work out why my IE isn't working..

Check the proxy settings?

Some people like to set them to something that won't work, think it's funny apparently.

Also what firewalls are running? could they block it?

is there a Uni policy now on crap, err sorry, potentially less secure browsers?

keep using firefox

use adblock plus and select the EasyList subscription

will remove all crap from websites

I used to use it, but since IE7 borrowed its tabs and smooth interface I've scrapped it. I prefer to have everything by microsoft if possible, just because its smooth and integrates nicely, I like to keep everything tip top and organised you see!

I prefer noscript as it blocks ALL crap, scripting etc. on a page.

Can be a bit of a pain since everyone thinks their site needs 1001 scripts in some awful mashup. So you can spend a fair while allowing certain sites, but it's ideal if you use a core group of sites all the time.

Having IE7 as an integrated part of Windows has been one of it's core security problems. I believe they've ammended it quite a lot in Vista but still...

IE7 is far from 'tip top' it's crap and slow
