I have a old intel p4 500mhz, 160mb of mem, 10gb hdd laptop running win98 se.

At the mo Im using a pcmcia network card going to my d-link router, and the transfeing of files between my desktop(also plugged in to my router) and laptop pcs seems slow. Just copying a mp3 file takes about 3 or 4 secs. I know its something todo with the laptop or the pcmcia network card, cos I sometimes reinstall my mates pcs for them, and I have to back up there data on to my desktop, and the speed is nice and fast then.

Also my laptop dosnt like ebay, the speed slowly grinds to a holt at loading pages after 20mins or so, and the fan on the laptop kicks in, but it seems todo other internet browsing fine and quite fast. Any ideas why?

Ive ordered a "Dlink DSL-902 Wireless ADSL Modem Router with PCMCIA Adapter Bundle", so Im hopeing its the pcmcia network card thats at fault here. But the main reason for going wireless is cos my laptop is quite away from my router and i have to have a network cable running across my room to get to it.

I highly recommend downloading "TCP Optimizer" (Google it).

Really good little app. Simply select your adapter from the drop down list and change the radio button to "optimal". Apply the changes and reboot.

I think the site you get the little app from also has some good info and tweaks for Win98. ;) But at least then you know the laptop is configured a bit better. You can go further and manually set values such as RWIN and MTU. :)
