Internet keeps freezing

Hey all.
I have Plusnet Fibre ~38mb.
I have the free router that comes with it.

My internet and online game (BF4) freeze now and then - Usually ~20 seconds then it springs back to life. I can't even go into the router settings.
It can't be my powerline adaptor (Desktop PC) as the Microserver in the living room is directly wired to it and has the same issue.
The router says it has been connected for several days.

Is it:
- Crap router. Buy a new one.
- Another issue I have missed?

Can you ping it when this issue happens?

Router IP is 192.168.1.254.
When it is playing up I cannot access the router settings via Internet Explorer but I can ping it in Command Prompt.

To be honest I don't know much about what makes a good router.

They will all have 4+ wired ports and wifi. All I want is stability

Yep!

Trouble is, when it is playing up I can ping the router but can't even get into the settings. No idea how to get into the modem settings.

Ping average 2ms when working.
Ping average 25ms when no internet. A wide range of pings. Worst was 85ms.

Did this using CMD and then Ping 192.168.1.254.

Any newer versions of the RT-N56U?
A 2010 model seems a bit old, but does this really matter?
Perhaps the Asus RT-AC56U?

Just checked again when it was playing up. It is 1ms when OK and playing up so please ignore the earlier reading.
I checked the router settings again today and the external BT modem has been connected now for 8+ days.

I am connected via a powerline adaptor to the router (cabled).
However the PC downstairs has exactly the same issue and is connected to the router directly.
