Hi,

I'm after a free Linux distro that can be customised a little (to show a custom wallpaper)

Then locked down so no changes can be made to it (or changes that are lost on reboot)

Any ideas?

The distro is eluding me completely but I've seen an embedded system that you can create then lock down as read only. Would that line of approach do something similar to what you want?

I'm after a free Linux distro.......

are there any that aren't free?

....I digress.

as a solution to the locked down nature of the build, maybe configure your distro to include firefox and launch it into kiosk mode on startup, and then have the OS boot from a read-only form of media, such as CD-ROM (and make sure the OS is entirely loaded into RAM, not running from CD - will be slow as all hell!)

disclaimer: my linux experience is entirely limited to setting up a couple of game servers (in a very trial-and-error way) on ubuntu, there categorically will be a better way to do it!!

edit: what divebod has suggested (porteus kiosk), is pretty much gonna be a better bet ;)
