Internet Line.

Right, i plan to move into a new bedroom the other side of the house. On my laptop in the said room , the connection is low-very low.
Not good!

Im getting a desktop soon(see hardware thread for my thread) and was wondering how much it would cost to get an internet line in the said room. It has a phone socket?

So in plugging the pc into the phone socket i get the internet?

Totally coming into this blind, dont have a clue how they work.

You're using wireless at the moment, yes?

Is your ISP cable (Virgin) or ADSL (everyone else)?

Is there anything directly connected (ie wired) to the wireless router/access point which your laptop is connecting to?

If not can you move the router upstairs and plug it into the phone point?

Also is wired internet better than wireless in terms of downloading stuff, like speeds. Ive got 8.m/b but i dont get that , ever!

DAMN, just been informed by my mum that we dont have a working phone line upstairs!

So where does that leave me/

If you haven't got a working phone line it will probably be easier to use powerline. This will use your electric cables for the network.
You would plug an ethernet cable from your pc to the adapter in the plug socket. Plug another adapter downstairs and a cable from that to the router.

How much are we looking at for a new plug to be fitted so i can use the ethernet?

HomePlug's almost certainly going to be faster than 8Mbps, so it wouldn't make any difference to your connection.

Wiring an extensions would cost the price of some extension cable and a socket, 30p/metre + £5?

May go for the extension.
