hey,

i dont know the 1st thing about internet connections other than you plug it in and it works,

and after 4 hours it seems to just freeze, msn shuts down all internet related stuff looses connection, and then i have to reboot router to get the connection flowing again.

what could be the first thing that could be causing this and what shall i check or change to fix it please?

Thanks

Well, im on a router

Hmm, dsl, i think not sure, but i was on a Adsl usb modem which came with my internet befor i setup my router.

it connects from the router to a phone socket :D
its worked fine for past 5 months

8mbps internet btw, need any more info? sorry im not the brightest spark with connections :D

are you running torrents or similar? If so, you could be maxing the NAT translation buffer on the router - try reducing the number of connections etc, should find it works better then.

If not - try upgrading the router's firmware.

Is it always 4 hours?

Does your router have any test function? For example in both my speedtouch routers there is an option to test your internet connection it is quite good as it shows where in the chain the problems is.

Also do you have your IP address DHCP assigned from the router or manually configured?

If its DHCP I would quickly check that you get all *** correct information from *** router, start a cmd line and do an
ipconfig
command to see if you still have a proper IP address and gateways etc.
Other good commands to use for basic troubleshooting on the command line are ping and tracert.

For example
ping www.google.co.uk
tracert www.google.co.uk

that should give you some information and hopefully help you find your problem.

My Router used to do this, except it was at random intervals it would just cut off and reboot.

Updated the firmware on it and now its been running 2 months solid.

sorry for the verry late reply iv been out motorcross practis allday.

My router is a netgear its been fine untill a few days ago,

by the way i switch my router off at night when i close my pc down and then when i boot my pc up when i wake up my router connects to the internet there and then.

Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I do run UTorrent but i havent ran it for 2 days and it still does it, not sure if thats what caused it but my old torrent downloader used to cut my internet out after 25mins but that has been fixed using Utorrent instead,
But like i say, it does it even when torrents not running

Any more suggestions?

Thank you
