Hello all i'm thinking of buying a psp and wondered what it's like for internet usage as just want something to keep by the bed for internet and to play back video and audio podcasts

Personally i think it sucks for internet use, it's not an especially powerful browsing machine and can't handle pages that are graphics intensive or have recent versions of flash.

Video it is excellent for, the screen is great and it's easy to rip from DVD with the right software.

However if you only want it to keep by the bed are you sure you wouldn't be better off with something like an asus eee? the internet experience will be superior in every way and the screen is larger for video use, plus you can customise it a lot more.

Surfing the net on a PSP is a struggle, the PSP browser is 'basic' to say the least. It struggles to display certain embedded content, will run out of memory really fast if you try and open more than a few pages at once, and you will have to do a lot of scrolling to view pages that aren't built to fit the PSPs screen ratio. I'd say its handy to have just incase you want to google something fast, but for heavy use I really wouldn't recommend it...

Ill agree with whats been said so far, its a really basic browsing experience, its quite fiddly and it sometimes can't handle graphics intensive pages. I find mine even crashes when browsing, it totally locks up so i have to replace the battery to get it started again. :(

I much prefer my iPod Touch. :)

If you have nothing else it will do for casual news browsing, but I have a laptop and PS3 and PC so I don't do it very often.

The only time I use it if my girlfriend is watching TV, the laptop is off and I want to check some news headlines but nothing more.

It is more of an extra than a main feature IMO.

Like has been said before the internet sucks on the PSP.

Cant watch embedded videos (unless you have CFW and PSP tube and thats not that good) and it runs out of memory if theres more than one picture one the site :(

I find it takes an age to load even a very basic page on the PSP. Plus it runs out of memory very fast. No good for browsing porn sites.

Yea the main problem is that it runs out of memory too fast so sites with excess images fill up the cache too quick and the browser refuses to load anymore of the webpage. I aint sure if there is a work around with custom firmware or if its possible to use Opera or something, maybe worth a google as I haven't been on the scene for a while so couldnt tell you.

Never had it happen on my PSP, happens all the time on my PS3.

its ok for looking up forums like ocuk unless you hit a lol cat pic thread then the memory usage will be way to high if i recall the net browser uses 4mb the cache etc uses up the same 4 mb as well and its not the main 32mb ram (fat) or 64mb ram if you get a slim.

it is actually possible to view a lot of streaming video sites on it if you use a homebrew program called "psptube" but google is better for finding out more about that since i cant go into detail about it here and custom firmware is required.

edit: pimp streamer is awesome it streams videos pics and music from your pc hard drive over wireless in real time eg a 400 mb avi file or mkv etc file the computer does the converting while streaming it over to the psp but needs custom firmware as well :)

sonys "legit" version of pimp streamer is the http://reviews.cnet.com/video-playe...lf-b20-locationfree/4505-6463_7-32058607.html which does similar stuff with a hefty price tag lol
