Is a microfilter one of those small box things, which lets you plug a modem and a phone into a single phone socket? Because I had one, but had to replace it with a normal splitter as it broke..

It could possibly be just a microfilter problem but unlikely imo.
More likely than the explanation you just gave.
Especially since if you read the thread you'd see that he actually said he didn't have a microfilter plugged in.

ADSL can work without a microfilter but it'd cut you off when your phone rings or is picked up. What I suggested is a legitimate fault - fair enough it might be just a microfilter, its nice to be jumped on...
