At the moment, whenever I put my phone off its hook, the internet works and whenever my phone is on the hook, my internet disconnects...

Why is this happening? (To post this thread my phone had to be off the hook...)

Aye, check filters are in every socket. If so, and they're connected properly, you've probably got yourself a faulty one. Happens more often than you'd imagine.

Some of us can't get fibre. Easiest solution is to make sure he has a microfilter plugged into EVERY phone point (hope your house alarm isn't wired into your phone line maybe?) that has an appliance plugged in, yes that includes SKY.
That's where I'd start anyways.

Is a microfilter one of those small box things, which lets you plug a modem and a phone into a single phone socket? Because I had one, but had to replace it with a normal splitter as it broke.

If not, what is a microfilter and where can I get one?

I don't have SKY or anything, just my phone and modem plugged into my phone socket.

My modem is a Netgear DG834GT.

This is why it isn't working then, you have to use a microfilter to seperate the ADSL signals and the phone signals, otherwise the phone signals interfere with the adsl and break it.

Ok, thank you everyone for your help. :) I will get a new microfilter as soon as I can!

Also remove the bell wire from the master socket, or get a new (homereach are they called now?) faceplate for it...

Too lazy to google atm, but im sure you can find what i mean.

Sounds like a high open fault, pick up the phone and just listen - any sign of crackling and call your telephone provider and report a fault. DO NOT MENTION BROADBAND, otherwise you'll get a few laps round india playing pass the parcel :)

What usually happens is the drop line from your nearest telephone pole will probably have a small cut possibly from a bird claw, overtime this has got worse and the line corroded. When you pick up the phone, this increases the voltage which 'jumps' the corroded part hence your BB working. Your telephone provider will arrange for BT to come and put a tester on the line and find where the fault is, usually in the drop line which they will then replace - problem solved.

It could possibly be just a microfilter problem but unlikely imo.

Or at this time of year, it could be moisture getting into BT's external junction box and shorting out the pins.
But I'd check out the microfilters first.

More likely than the explanation you just gave.

Especially since if you read the thread you'd see that he actually said he didn't have a microfilter plugged in.

;)

ADSL can work without a microfilter but it'd cut you off when your phone rings or is picked up. What I suggested is a legitimate fault - fair enough it might be just a microfilter, its nice to be jumped on...

Sorry, didn't mean it to be that harsh :p.

It's just that the thread is titled 'Internet only works when the phone is off the hook', and he clearly states that he hasn't got a microfilter connected. :p
