We're moving to a new house soon that's situated in a village in the countryside. The house currently has Plusnet that gets a whopping 0.3mb DL and not much more UL.

I imagine this will be a joy to game on!

I have heard of satellite options for internet, what are these like and the price?

How do people cope? :p

Hey, I'm on 1.2mb download/0.4 upload on the new house I'm in now.

Basically, if you've got more than one person on the internet at a time, then you're going to have a bad time. You will constantly lag spike, it's not fun. If it's only you that's using it, then it'll be fine.

Satellite internet from what I've read isn't good for gaming because of the ping. I don't think it's a viable option, plus it's rather on the expensive side.

Last alternative is mobile internet. Check on a map to see the coverage and see what deals are on. It might be better than 0.3, but I have no experience with mobile internet, so no idea on the stability.

Good luck :D

I'm stuck on max 330KB/s download (1-2Mb?), it sucks. I just do a lot of downloading overnight.

330KB/s is more like a 2.5Mbit connection.

OP is saying a 0.3Mbit connection

I'd get an ADSLnation filter and a router with SNR tweaking and hope for the best!

You may be able to increase the sync speed of your broadband by removing all extensions and fitting an nte5 adsl faceplate. We saw a 3mbit boost in speed by completing the above.

No matter how good the internal wiring looks, don't under estimate its ability to cripple your speeds.

My parents live in the sticks and they get 40/40Mbit through a wireless broadband access point that's fed from a central mast in the village. Latency is between 5-15ms :)

They got set up through a Welsh assembly grant, so installation was free but iirc the company canvassed the whole village for interest before any work got done.

If you're confident you could get at least 50 homes then I'm sure there are other companies that would install a similar system. They pay £20 a month all in and there's no FUP.

Here's some pictures of my install before I went to FTTC. I had the 20/20 package which was fine. The antenna connects to a router as a modem would, so it's pretty sleek. My distance to the mast was a shade over 5km.

Andy, are you staying within North Yorkshire still? LNComms (ILoveBroadband) cover a hell of a lot of North Yorkshire with their wireless infrastructure in villages. I have been with them for 3 years and always got a 20/20mb service as advertised, where we got 1.2mb on ADSL. I only recently cancelled due to FTTC arriving in the village. I have a small antenna on the roof similar to EVH's above which connects to a booster high up in the village, full direct line of sight, never dropped a beat. Here is their coverage map:

Thanks for the replies guys. Sme interesting options and it seems I'm going to have to grin and bear it for a few (?) months :(

Terrier, yeah I'm in North Yorkshire still. That website is not working at the mo.

It seems where I'm moving is under evaluation for fibre which is encouraging and I've registered my interest with the boundless comms option.

Thanks again. Food for thought. Andy

Don't know if my location constitutes being in the sticks but my neighbors are sheep on the outskirts of a village and about 3-4KM from the exchange. I think it's ADSL Max and syncs at 3-3.5Mbps. Being on TalkTalk doesn't help and during the day it can be pretty crap but this is more the fault of the ISP. During the good times (late at night when it's quite) gaming and downloading are fine. Ping is typically 40-50ms at best although in the good old days before over-subscription it went as low as 30ms so the line can't be all that bad. Have the modem plugged into the master socket and the house was built in the mid-90s so wiring should be good.

Satellite broadband and gaming is a NO-NO! (in general).

If you need best performance I'd agree with other people and see if you're eligible for 'Wireless Broadband' which is equivalent to the fibre when you're not able to get it in rural areas such as there (where you will be relocating).

Let me explain why satellite broadband is a "NO-NO!":

Latency on satellite can vary between 100ms - 1000ms (average satellite latency is between 500ms and almost 700ms) depending on geographical location and if you're not around any kind of interference (trees, telephone masts and TV masts as these will distract the signal and cause some sort of interference with you and the satellite up in space). Although, there are benefits from it such as the high download speeds (Highest is 18Mb/s which is roughly 2.25MB/s and the average is roughly 1Mb/s - 10Mb/s) - but are you prepared for a bad latency? (which is one of the main needed things in 'on-line gaming').

Plus, the price for either is almost double of the average price for broadband in the UK.

I hope you're prepared to pay an 'arm & a leg' for such things.
