Internet partially working in vista, but fine on xp.

I've installed Vista with Linksys WAG54GS gateway (which was and still is working fine on xp).
- Some websites I can load, others I can't.
- Some files I can download, others I can't.
- Can't use windows update or any other built in updater.
- Can't even get on microsoft.com

If you have two NICs, try the other one. One of my onboard nics didn't like Vista but the other was fine. I was experiencing the same issues as you.

I had the same issue, turned out to be some extra options included in the NIC card drivers needed disabling. Unfortunately I don't have vista on at the minute so can't tell you which two it was.
