Internet problems - router connected but internet not working

Over the last month or so, my internet connection has been causing me a bit of a problem. A few times my router has dropped internet connection and the light indicating a connection has gone red meaning no connection.

Each time I've called the service status number for my isp, sometimes there is a reported problem other times there isn't.

On a couple of occassions, the internet light has come back on on the router but internet still not working on the pc.

This has happened this morning. Logging into the router shows it has an internet connection and checking connectivity seems fine but still it's not working on the pc.

Any thoughts what the problem might be? Is it likely to be some problem with my isp or might it be my router dying on me? Or something else entirely?

Personally i would say that if the router is showing an internet connection as you say then
I would put my money on it being something between your router and your computer.

I sometimes have this problem if my modem drops connection i have to reset everything
which is only a 2 minute job anyway.

Unplug the modem and the router and turn off the computer.
Plug in the modem only and wait for it to boot up till you have all the lights apart from
the ethernet light.
Plug in the router and wait for all the light to come on there and make sure the internet
light is on as well, at this point the ethernet light on the modem will have lit up as well.

Turn on the computer again and login to windows and it should then be fine.

If it is still not working i would suggest you go into device manage and make sure there
is not problems with your network card.

I did try rebooting the PC and it still didn't work. I then switched off the router and and switched it back on, all the lights cmae on and internet is working again now.

I do wonder if my router is dying on me as I've been having a few problems with it recently. For example trying to get my phone connected via wireless, the DCHP kept failing to assign an ip address to the phone. However once I rebooted the router it worked fine for a few hours before failing again.

It is 4 years old is it likely to be on it's last legs after that length of time?
