Internet Sharing Setup

My current setup is with Tiscali, with a usb modem connected to my pc. I share the internet with my 2 other housemates via a hub on the landing (i.e., my pc and their 2 laptops are all connected to the hub). I would like to buy a router and change the setup, so that I don't have to leave my pc on all the time.

I'm in need of some practical advice really. The router would need to be in my bedroom (as that's where the phone line is). Their laptops don't have wireless either, so it would have to be a wired connection.

I'm pretty sure I can connect the router to the hub by ethernet cable.I assume that my housemates could then continue to share the internet as before (via the hub), or is something more complicated involved when a router is connected to a hub?

I was thinking of buying the one below, because my current modem only has a usb connection (and I think that you need a modem with a ethernet connection to connect to a router). Are combined router/modems any good?

Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem/Router/Switch/Firewall (NW-017-NG).

Any advice most appreciated.

That netgear router will do the job fine.

I wouldn't share an internet connection any other way than with a modem/router, unless I had a dedicated server rig which would act as a gateway server.

Granted, but can I run the router through the hub and share the internet that way?

No problems here with DG814. If you have ADSL, and want a single box solution for multiple PC's sharing net (and shared LAN folders/printers) You need a Modem/Router/Switch/Firewall aka a gateway Yeah a bit confusing .

Netgear DG834G or Netgear DG834PN

You just plug each PC via ethernet into a port and then you can access each other and the net. Or use wireless.

You can use a router with a switch and share that way, but that means more boxes but I believe it's more secure that way. For highest security you'll use a net server, with that connected to a hub.

Yes, I get that. What I want to know is whether I can connect a router via ehternet cable to my hub and, more importantly, whether my housemates can access the internet via the hub via the router - without any complicated setup processes?

For practical reasons I don't want lots of cables coming into my bedroom to connect directly to the router/switch. The router has to be in my bedroom because of where the phone line is. The hub is outside on the landing, and easier for others to connect to.
