Internet sharing

I currently have my internet provided via virgin media.

Although my modem is down stairs i'm connected via a wire.

Is it posible to connect my xbox to the internet aswell as my PC.

A switch wont 'do the trick'. If you want to share the connection to multiple end devices you can't simply connect the modem to a switch and connect the end devices to that, as you will have problems. What you need is a router.

Overclockers sell these cable routers. Personaly i recomend the linksys WRT54GL.

Or depending on how much VM value you as a customer, you may be able to get a WGR614 (Netgear) from them for free.

My bad as Dist said.. you'd need a router.. I forgot the standard VM modem isn't a router as well.
