Got sky max and bt reckons I should be able to get 8-16mb, but i only get between 4-5.5.
Is sky just crap or is it likely just to be my line. I've usually found bt estimates reasonably good.

Is there anyway to find out which one it is?

Depends on your distance from your local exchange...

Is your telephone line split when it comes into the house or do you use filters on telephone sockets?

Also, can you post your s/n ratio and your Margins on the Modem status of your router ?

No idea how to get into a sky router, any ideas?

Yeah there is two sockets so is split, I use the master but have tried both..
Just sky tv on one, bb on the other, Both sockets have filters.

Fair enough, also, i was assuming you knew how to connect to your router, but like the above guy said.. in the URL of your browser type your default gateway.

If you dont know how to do that, Open CMD ( Start -> Run -> "cmd" )

Type ipconfig

Look for your default gateway, type that IP into your URL bar on your browser. :)

I knwo how to connect I just don't have any idea what the username/password is..

As it doesn't appear to be the standard admin admin/password of most default routers. Sky send them pr configured and give you the wifi security numbers. I don't know if sky set the user name / password or if sagem just use something other than admin.

Hm, with a margin like that they cannot really push anymore speed onto your line... Your attentuation is perhaps a little high but nothing to worry about..

I assume from what you said before that the BT line you had previously was a faster connection speed.. Maybe Sky are filling your pipe but just putting through all the speed. hence why the margin would be nearly as low as it can stably be..

Have you called sky and queried the speed being slower?

No haven't had adsl in this house before. Just in previuse houses usually got roughly what bt checker says.

What is margin down to? just poor line?

well, its how much speed can be pushed over "x" distance.. Since your in a house which you don't know what BT connection would actually get, it may be that your are getting your best.. and your quite far from your exchange..

When your margin drops to about 5 you line will be unstable and you will suffer from packet loss and possible disconnects.. So sky will try to give you the best speed, while keeping your margin stable above 6... or they should..

However, the low margin and connection speed could be down to bad wiring in the house, an unfiltered socket, the line from the telephone pole outside your house is old and or damaged. Many things...

When your on the telephone, calling someone, is the line clear, no crackling or noise.. ? if not then the line from the telephone pole is probably fine.

Also, on the master socket, it is possible to have a filter there, so the router has a dedicated line, direct from the master socket. This removes the need for filters on each socket in the house and the noise generated by the rest of the house.

If you do both of them, then you are probably getting the best you can from your ISP... unless your modem is faulty and connecting slower, and has increased margin, happens very rarely but i have seen it happen.

There are two types of BT socket.

If it is an NTE5 it will have two screws and a faceplate at the lower half. Remove the screws and pull the faceplate towards you. The test socket is behind.

If it's the older style faceplate, look here.
