Hey guys im pretty sure this is in the wrong section, but I didn't know where to post it so that's why im here :)

The problem im having is my old dears boyfriend comes down every weekend and uses a torrent programme which is absolutely crippling my connection speed (Virgin Media 20mb) and even though my mother and me have asked him to stop he keeps downloading 20+ movies at a time! I can't turn off the wireless as my sister needs it for her revision so is there a programme out there I can download and choose how much bandwith he can use?

Sorry for the spelling mistakes im not best with it this morning!

Thanks.

I would simply change the wireless access credentials, particularly if he is using your connection to download copyrighted material. Then tell him he will not get access until he ages to stop.

If you are not willing to do that then you need to see if your router had QOS options.

Virgin Media cripple your internet connection as soon as any p2p traffic is noticed anyway so theres no point throttling him its gonna slow down the connection whatever. Best off persuading him to stop or forcefully stop him, change ur wireless password as suggested or if he is wired in go into your router and block his PC.

To get to your router:
- start > run > type cmd and hit enter
- In the black box that opens up type ipcofig / all
find the line that says default gateway there will be a ip address which looks like 192.168.0.1
- Open up an internet browser type that ip into the url box and hit enter
it will ask you for a login
- You can find this in the router documents if you left it as default or on the router itself.
- Once logged in have a look around for options to allow / disallow certain computers.

Hope that helps.

Either change the wireless password or get a router that supports Tomato or DD-WRT.

Tell him he needs to stop downloading copyrighted materials or he gets no net access at all.

try Netlimiter. I use it whenever I need to download something without saturating our 2mb fixed line. You can set it to limit that computer's internet traffic speed in general or individual programs, even down to the source ip address.
You shouldn't need this for torrents though as programs such as uTorrent have built-in speed rate limiters.
