Hopefully someone can help me here, for the last few days my internet has been on a rollercoaster of up and downs which seem to happen every 30 seconds. I can barely read emails at this rate...

I get roughly 30 seconds of perfect use, then the connection just seems to stop and after 20 seconds or its back to normal again for 30 seconds.

Im on a post office phone line as we just moved in last month and my internet i carrried over from Be as their service was fine so far.

My router is a Thomson Tg587 u7 ( this was my old router from the old house ).

I dont use wireless so dont know how it can be so bad, when i do a speedtest im getting around 4mbs which is fine as its an old style BT faceplate.

If someone could help me diagnose any potential settings that might be massivley out id be grateful!

When your connection goes down log into the web interface and note down the connection stats, including attenuation, Signal to Noise Ratio etc.

You could also use routerstatslite to log your connection over time if it's supported. What you should get if your line is unsyncing itself is a very erratic graph.

sry but how would i get my router stats? i logged onto my router and rest to default settings but i couldnt see anywere that had my attenuation etc

@MissChief it doesnt lose the connection and reconnect, its like the internet is just lagging every 30 seconds

Download and run the FULL Routerstats program as the 585 v7 is fully supported.
There is a summary tab in there to see the telnet information thats being logged by your router and it plots SNR Margin and connection speed on a graph as well.

If it doesnt drop sync with the exchange its an ISP fault more than likely.

somewhere in your setting when you log in will be router stats, though you might have to goto advanced or something...without router stats it's difficult to diagnose...or do as described above

upstream tab =

Noise Margin: 6.5
Output powe dB
Bandwidth: Layer kbps
Attenuation: 24.5 dB
Power: 12.0 dBm

downstream tab =

Noise Margin: 6.5 dB
Bandwidth: bled
Physical kbps
Attenuation: 43.0 dB
Power: 17.5 dBm

Errors:
FEC: 22899
CRC: 76
HEC: 61

anything more you need ?

that's a lot of errors, are you plugged straight into the test socket? tried changing filters? Reducing the errors will go a long way to helping, is the line crackly/noisy if you pick up the phone?

the main socket is in the hallway, there is then a cable connected into this socket which feeds another socket in the pc room. my router is then connected into this "pc room socket" and i have an ethernet cable from my router into my pc.

to use a telephone i have to unplug the internet in the hallway and plug the phone striaght into the socket as there is jsut a ridiculous amout of noise.

there you go then..answered your own problem. Sort the wiring out and it will be better. You would be better having the router downstairs and running the ethernet up to the pc room aswell. Gain some speed and stability that way. Try a different filter if you have one too, takes 30 secs

cheers, will give that a go. The reason i posted is that it has been fine apart from the last few days.

Do my noise settings etc look ok then?

You need a filtered face plate in the master socket, Google NTE5 filtered faceplate.
This is assuming you have the right BT socket in the first place; can you remove the bottom half of the master socket, there should be another socket to the right underneath? See http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm

Do your phone extension(s) run from the front sockets of the master socket or are they wired in behind?
As a matter of interest is the extension to your PC room a flat type of phone cable?

Noise margins looks fine.

Get Routerstats on it though! :D

my main socket is one of the old bt sockets, no split faceplate etc, when i take the 2screws out all there is, is a cable coming out of the floor with 1 x orange cable conected to the left hand side in the middle of 3 cable clip things and the same on the right but a blue strand of cable again going into the middle of the 3 clip things.

Is it an easy enough job for me to change the faceplate to a newer type as this would almost certainly help?

Easy enough to change, but you aren't allowed to. The master socket is BT's property.
