Hey all. My ISP is Virgin and up untill about two weeks ago my connection was fine. I pay for 20mb's. Currently I am receiving between 1.5 and 4mb's.
I called Virgin to explain this, the lady went away to check if any problems were in my area, none there. She asked me to type in CMD netstat -a then asked how many times did it say LISTENING, so I counted. She then said because I counted over six LISTENING's the fault is with my pc. I fix and build pc's and know for a fact nothing has changed but I am not 100% up on this netstat -a CMD. Is she right?

To my knowledge Netstat -a will display what ports your computer is listening on for communications. I don't agree with more than 6 listening ports causing issues at all. A netstat -n will be more usefull since it will display what active connections are going in and out of the system.

Leave the computer alone for a few minutes with all web browsers / p2p apps / games shut so the network activity should be idling. Then do a netstat -n and see how many there are and report back.

Lets be honest, do you really think she was talking rubbish? There are widespread problems at the moment and the lovely lady you spoke to just about knows how to log into her machine and read from pre scripted answers.

For the best service, log into the virgin forums where you will find English speaking technical people who actually care.

Tbh I find VM support infuriating. I totally agree that they are reading from a script and thus their tech knowledge is probably lacking however when you try and explain to them that the problem is THEIR end they dismiss the fact and just resort to either "reboot your router", "reboot your modem". I would certainly report back the idling netstat connections terrystar as this could help rule out your PC atleast.

I'd personally never call VM for technical support unless no other options were available ...the usenet technical support was great (until that got shutdown), now the best is the VM forums.

VM support isn't great but wouldn't swap it for anything else. Have you increased you downloading activity? I'm just wondering because if you have exceeded your limit, VM impose a reduction is service of up 75% for 30 days in some cases, unless you are on the 50mb package.
