I have a high spec PC that I had custom built a year ago. It was lightning fast on the net until recently. I have virgin media 10mb broadband but can't get more than 500kb speed. I have tested the speed via wifi with an ipad and am getting between 7-9 mb. I also pulled out the ethernet cable from my pc and put it into my laptop. I got 7-9mb again thus proving that the pc is the problem. Any ideas??

could be a million things...drivers, virus, malware, spyware, hard drive errors, memory errors...you need to start and find out logically. Check for viruii etc. check for hard drive errors and see if anything changes. Test in a different browser just to make sure...post your router stats aswell

Malware sounds a likely culprit - Have you run a FULL virus scan of all drives etc.. Does it come up clean?

Do you know a program called Hijack This? - If so - Cut and Paste a log file of it and maybe we can help some more. ;)

Tested in a different browser, no malware, adware or viruses found. Can anyone recommend any good free programs for checking and fixing problams and errors.?

Hi,

Got the same problem this evening, also with VM (50MB). Have tried rebooting the 'Super' hub, but no difference. Will wait and see what it's like tomorrow.

If you go into the Cmd terminal and enter netstat it should tell you all the program's that are currently using your Internet connection. From there you can pin point which programs are using up all your bandwidth. If other devices are connecting at the correct speed then it probably means you have some malware present or have a program like utorrent running downloading and uploading in the background. Make sure every program that your aware of is closed down before running netstat

Also try clearing your cache, cookies etc. go to Admin tools > services > DNS client and DHCP client then click stop then start to refresh the DNS base. Is it particular websites you have slow speeds with?

Hi, here is what netstat came up with. Cache /cookies cleared already. Had 9mb briefly last night. Woke up this morning, now 135 kb!!!

Need to find out if its your PC, your local network including your router, or your ISP.

Grab a linux live boot disc, and see if the issue still occurs. If it does, its not malware or other Windows crapout. Try connected directly to your router with a cable if you are currently on wireless. Also try from device to device on your local network - if thats running fine, then it has to be your router or ISP.. in which case get on the phone to them.

Dont know what part of yhe UK you are in but seems to be a common theme with Virgin at the moment.

The area im in has been poor for over a week now. Last time this happened they put me back on the old DOCSIS platform and it was fine. Only problem with that is your limited to 20meg but a working 20meg is better than a crappy 30 - 100meg imo.

OP, tried reinstalling chipset drivers at all?

I just turned on the guest account and used it to go online. Getting 6mb now. Switched back to my account now getting 400kb. Something in my account is throttling my connection.
