Interview for new job - what should i say for 'why i'm leaving role?'

I actually posted on here about my current work situation a month or 2 back but removed the post after getting advice, generally along the lines of voting with my feet which i'm doing.

Long story short, i moved 125 miles for a new job/company and the day i got there they said that i won't be given the job i applied for and that i will be given a different job on the same pay however. The job sounded awful and in fact, 9 months in it's worse than i thought it would so i need to get out.

No apologies from them or anything, just a total waste of time and they have trapped me in London as i signed a private rental contract when i moved here, keeping me here for 12 months so i've tried to stick it out but i have to get out of there.

Anyway i have an interview for a new role soon. One which i've wanted to do my all my life.

When they ask why i want to leave after a short time (9 months) is it best to be honest and say they have given me a job i have not applied for (or ever would) and that i've tried to make it work for the last 9 months blah but it's simply not for me or is that too 'negative' sounding?

The new interview is for a job i actually applied for in 2022 but they did say at time role wouldn't start until 2024.

When i first got there and they told me i did think it was just extremely bad luck but i later discovered, as a matter of fact, i was never going to get the job i applied for even at the time when they interviewed me for it, they knew then i was never going to get that role i applied for so that made me angry when i found out and made me decide to leave.

I would not say "they lied etc" but thinking more along the lines of "when i got there they told me there has been a organisational restructuring and my intended role doesnt exist anymore and they given me an unrelated role which i''ve tried to make work etc" ( this is what they told me on day 1 and i know to be untrue now factually)

As for why i want the job with the new company, no issues there, hopefully my authentic eagerness and interest in the role shines through!

The new job won't be in London.

Im nota good liar. I will just say they made changes and put me in a totally different job to the one I applied for and I've done my best to make it work etc.

Which is the truth

I am going to be honest and stick to the truth and not linger on it too much. I've done nothing wrong.

Despite how they did me over I've remained completely professional. In fact, so much so they have just named me as an exceptional employee in the bi-annual company awards.

They are giving me a pay rise too based on this but while I appreciate the recognition and pay rise, I value my happiness and sanity more.

If I don't get the job from this weeks interview I will just keep plugging away at other applications.

“My current position is not what I was led to believe I was applying for. I’ve tried to make it work for both me and the company. Unfortunately it’s not working out so I’m looking to move on.”

Keep it simple and keep your emotions out of it. I doubt the interviewer cares too much but they will make a black mark against you if you start slagging off your previous employer

That's very much along the lines of what i'm planning to say.

On the other hand he went to great lengths to take the job. I wouldn't make a big deal of it, as someone domestic situation is really irrelevant to most companies.

Whereas a role not being as advertised is as old as the hills.

Really? I've never applied for a job and been given a totally different one before. I'm in my 40's so not my first job. Roles not being exactly as described sure, but completely different and unrelated? Never happened to me until now. I wouldn't have moved if they told me what the real job was doing but it's all done now.

Already lots of good advice, I’d just like to say good luck at the interview

Thanks, bricking it as we speak :D 1 hour to go.

Thanks for well wishes, 5 minutes before interview started they told me it could no longer go ahead today and they will contact to reschedule.

Hi all,

It was remote/online so no costs incurred thankfully. There was a good reason it could not go ahead. I will wait for the reschedule.

Rumours of laying staff off at my current role now. I can't win haha. Still if they lay me off when they are rumoured to happen at least i will be only on a monthly rolling contract in London so will just head back home.
