Interview Questions - IT Technician

Hi guys,

I am interviewing a prospective IT Technician for a school tomorrow! and need to prepare some questions to ask!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated... I've got a bad headache and my brain isn't working properly!!

It's all going to be theory as I know he can sort hardware and don't want to waste time.

I was going to give him some scenarious to prioritise etc etc.

Give him some hypothetical scenarios and ask him what he would do first, second etc...? To maybe diagnose the problem
 
What does DHCP stand for/do?
What is the difference between raid:1 and raid:5?
What is the default mask of a class A subnet?
What is a cluster?
Whats the difference between reverse and forward lookup zones?
What is the difference between incremental and differential backups?

Depends what his job is, if he's got to fix pcs etc, most of that is pointless. If he's got to manage a network it's pretty good ;).
 
Find out what he's like as a person. Lets face it, fixing PC's isnt rocket science so I'm sure he can manage - as you are a small team its far more important that you will get on.

Doesn't that come under the responsibility of IT techs then? If they are going round fixing client PC's, it's not always going to be a hardware problem (which the OP already knows the candidate is OK with).

Well at least those four wouldn't be needed for a normal techie.
 
Depends what his job role is going to be, if its end user support.

Ask him how he would tackle a couple of awkward situations.

A practicle test on his software knowledge might be worth while...

Maybe try and get him to stop net send type messeges that some of your users are getting i.e. disable messaging service..

Remote desktop wont connect (check its turned on) and firewall (winxpsp2 is off)

Maybe a group policy test, using gpedit.msc, and then telling him to force an update, to see if he knows gpupdate etc....

Driver signing is another good one...

BIOS boot order....or just a simple floppy disk in the drive.... so ntldr missing comes up....


Just a few not really technical, but not so easy to bluff type tests like that....

DHCP....APIPA knowledge might be usefull....

I can come up with loads more, but need to know what the job role will be exactly...

Maybe not the cluster one I suppose, but surely if I client PC has no/limited network connectivity they need to know how to reassign an IP address or troubleshoot DNS issues?
 
cant be bummed reading above but......

a simple one that catches a few out is

you are installing 2 hdd into a PC. what u need to do ?

look for them giving you jumper settings :)

Knowing what DHCP stands for wont help him fix it! So long as the people know what it does and how to fix/configure it I dont see the problem :confused: There are so many abbreviations in IT that knowing what they all spell out to be is pointless really IMO. So long as you can say DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, etc and know what they all do is the important thing!

But knowing what DHCP means won't help him, and neither will foward and reverse lookup zones.
