Interview - rude to ask if I got the job?

I always thought it showed interest if you enquire about it. I would ring them.

With one proviso: as long as you call them after they said they would know. If they said they would have notified the applicants by (say) the 12th, and it's now the 15th, then a polite e-mail is just fine. If you contact them on the 9th it looks like you weren't paying attention, or are just pushy. Remember: even if you are the best candidate, it's probably close, so annoying them isn't doing you any favours.

It's a little bit awkward in terms of timing perhaps but if you're on a four month contract your notice period cannot be all that long so if you do get the job you were interviewed for then it hopefully shouldn't be a major issue to negotiate an early release. Ok, it's not ideal and you may burn your metaphorical bridges with the company you've just agreed to work for but equally they should understand that a permanent role is usually more appealing.

As for when to ask I'd think as Meridian does, ask them after this week is up if they haven't contacted you but try to be polite and not pushy with your enquiry. I know it can be frustrating waiting on the results of something but it's not likely to be all that helpful to keep chasing especially when there may be good reasons that they cannot advise of the outcome sooner.
