Age isn't a factor when you are in your first year of the apprenticeship. A company can pay the minimum apprenticeship wage to someone who is 30 years old.

Can a 28/29 ywar old live on £4 an hour

They can if they lived at home with their parents.

The main point of my post however was to highlight that companies can pay the minimum amount despite being over a certain age.
