Intranet???

Hi Guys,
Im looking to build a simple intranet site for a company i do work for. I want to use it for displaying information for employees.

I would like the address in the address bar to display something like

http://companyname.intranet.com

is this possible or would i be safer keeping things simple?

I have an old dell blade server i want to use to host it, it has ubuntu on it at the minute but i would really like your input on this guys.

im building this from scratch guys and it needs to be cheap if not free as i have all the hardware.

Do i have to setup IIS on a server to run it properly?

Microsoft Sharepoint Services is great and free and fills 90% of requirements for most comapnies

any links to this?
