Can someone please explain how to enable DVD play back? I want to watch my movies through VLC. I have installed that successfully, but it won't play DVDs and I am not sure what to do.

TIA

Alternatively use Add/Remove and enable the "all available" in the drop down box at the top. Then do a search for "restricted' and select Ubuntu (or Xubuntu or Kubuntu whatever you are using) and install. This will install all of the codecs etc. required to play just about anything you can throw at it, it also includes flash and java. It is a very easy way of making sure you don't have to install what you need as you go along. :)

I thought they'd taken libdvdcss2 out of the restricted extras package because it was definitely illegal (!) in most countries, instead of just possibly illegal.

So they have! However, it is still a good way of getting most of what is needed in one go. Libdvdcss2 can be added manually as already described.

My favorite way to do it is to install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package which just gets all the restricted stuff in one go. This includes Flash, codecs, fonts, and a bunch of other stuff.
