Hey,

So I'm off to a quiz night tomorrow that's been arranged through work and whilst the advertised time is 7pm we have to wait for some folk who won't finish work till 8pm.

This got me to thinking and I shall now be taking Ticket to Ride and Formula D down there with me to keep people occupied until the others can make it to the venue!

Good choices of games to take? I reckon both can be explained pretty quickly and of course can both be stopped midway through if time is an issue. Most people going have never played anything more than Monopoly as well which should be fun trying to convert people!

Wish me luck :D

Excellent choices in my opinion, certainly for people who you can't guarantee will deal with more themed games. The other best ones I can think of would be Settlers of Catan (which I really don't enjoy, but that's just me) and even better Pandemic.

Pandemic is my favourite gateway game as a modern day saving the world game is easy for people to grasp, so no fantasy/sci-fi, plus it's it's cooperative, so brings people together as part of the game much easier.

As DotA said, I think card games might be a good option. Personally I love Lunch Money but I suspect it's not a great gateway game. I've recently picked up Love Letter, which is very simple and very fun. Also very cheap :p

The best one in my experience is Carcassonne, simple to play, difficult to get good at it and eases new guys by being 2 player so they don't feel nervous in a group.

Dah I was just about to say Carc. :D Other half's brother introduced me to that and Agricola a couple of years back. Great games.

Large crowd = more people more likely to pick up some board games. A good game i enjoy is the resistance. Its best played as a 5man game. The games about complete missions while yelling at each other and creating trust issues between you and your friends.

This is one of my favourite games of all time. It's beyond awesome :)

Fluxx is a great card game, and the rules explicitly state that people can dip in and out at any time.

Very simple rules (draw a card, play a card) so not much to learn :)
