Inverter or backlight?

Wondering if anyone can give me some advice? I have a laptop where the screen is working, but the backlight isn't, I think I've located the inverter but it appears to be built into the motherboard? When I measure the voltage on the pins with a multimeter I get 30v AC not connected, 44v AC when connected, is this roughly right for the output of an inverter? Is there any way (other than connecting to another system) of checking either component?

What make/model is it? Unless you have the proper tools, then the best way to find out which is faulty is to try a new screen or inverter but be aware that your cable could be faulty or there can even be a fault on the motherboard.

inverters should output between 300 and 5,000 volts depending on make/model etc...
