hi

been trying to set this up, and having a few problems,

the software wants me to turn of my firewall, is this safe to do so,

as my ip address will look like its coming from brazil instead of good old blighty, so if anyting untoward where to come sniffing I would be safe wouldnt I

it also tells me to turn of the firewall as it accesses different proxys and ports round the world,

as far as I am aware the proxy is a computer setup to tunnel traffic through so this would be a sort fo firewall anway

cheers

nigel

the site I visit logs your ip, I have a dynamic IP from sky, but dont want to have to wait till my sky ip changes

this software allows you to change pretend to change your ip at the touch of a button,

just need to know if using a proxy with my firewalls turned of is safe

reading the support pages of the software it says the firewall must be turned of due to using random ports,

you cant specifiy which ports it will use

tried the following and came across the same problem

I have a static IP inside my network, but wanting it to work on my external IP

have windows firewall turned on, and the port opened on my router for my IP address for p2p

http://invisibleip.com/ is one fo the softwares I have been trying

You should also be aware that any proxy servers you dont own and controll yourself can be big secuirty risk. There are lots of people out there who host proxy servers and monitor the traffic, trying to pick up passwords and such of the people who use the proxy.

Even something as popular as TOR is not safe. Data exits the TOR network the same way it enters. You send unencrypted usernames/passwords/emails into TOR, and the exit TOR unencrypted, so the people who have set up a TOR exit node can easily read what you send.

It's also worth checking whether the proxy in question sets the X-FORWARDED-FOR HTTP header, that will pass on your real IP in some situations.

I am guessing from the need to change your IP that you are trying to get multiple free downloads from a download site that only allows one download/IP/day?

If this is the case, most free proxies are not very quick anyway.

All sounds very dodgy to me.
Been banned from a forum somewhere else?
