In windows 7 some of my icons keep dissapearing off my desktop, eventually I realised that there seems to be some kind of hidden desktop off to the left of display.. if I move the mouse to all the corners of my desktop it stops at the edges except the left edge where the mouse dissapears, as do windows, icons etc. I can fit entire windows in this "hidden" area

Its as if I have a second monitor attached on the left of my monitor.. but I dont. Checking windows display settings I only see one monitor attached. I have never had a second monitor. I have looked for the windows 7 equivalent to what used to be called "desktop size" where you could make the desktop larger than your resolution but I cant seem to find this option...

I have tried searching google, but the search terms are so general I get just a load of useless results of people missing desktop icons and trying to configure dual displays

I would connect a 2nd monitor/telly and boot up. Then go to the bit where you change the screen res, click on the 2nd monitor and untick "extend my desktop...blah".

Apply, ok. Should be ok after that.

Its not a problem of the monitor not fitting, it fits perfectly and when I maximise windows they fill the screen perfectly.... something on the computer thinks there is another monitor attached but what I dunno

Right click on desktop > Screen resolution.

Under 'Multiple displays' make sure 'Show desktop only on 1/2' is selected. Not 'Extend' or 'Duplicate'.

Click 'Identify' to check whether your monitor is #1 or #2.

I found the problem I had an application installed which makes my iPad a second monitor.. even though the iPad was not connected it must still create this second desktop
