My thoughts on iOS 5 after installing the GM version last night.
Notification Center
A feature that has been missing for too long now. Have found it very handy to get everything in one place. The fact that it also shows on the lock screen also a great addition. Only had it on for a few hours so over the next week or so I expect this to be very useful.
iMessage
Something to compare with the BBM, so now I can finally tell all those BB users to shut up...or can I. Well I get unlimited text messages like a lot of people do with their contracts. Also I use WhatsApp that is cross platform. This really should have been a feature from day one and it is poor form by Apple that other 3rd part developers have basically plugged this gap a long time ago.
OK so with iMessage I can start a message on my iPhone and switch to it on my iPad. However I do not have an iPad. If I did have an iPad it would prob be left at home, so if I am chatting with my bit of crumpet on the side and the wife at home picks up the iPad....oh ****....iDivorce app will be installed onto me.
Newsstand
Yeah I can now give even more money to Apple. I hate reading ebooks on the iPhone as it is. The iPad it is a very good feature due to screen size. Now there is no need to carry books, newspapers or magazines around with you, just a £400 iPad that you would be ****ed off if left on the bus. Not a feature I would be using but if you do subscribe to a few magazines and newspapers that get delivered to you, then this will be a great App. Save the trees go digital. I am sure that HTML5 will **** off Apple as these providers switch away from Newsstand tho.
Reminders
I do like this, especially the location feature, where by you can set a location and have an alert to remind you when you are at the location. Again tho what took you soo long Apple. It would be even better if this would Sync with TASKS from Outlook.
Twitter
I do like this, so far I have been able to very quickly tweet pics, webpages, youtube videos, etc. I do not see me using the Twitter app again. However surely this is prejudice against Facebook...maybe I want to share the same things with my FB friends...lol. I am sure FB integration will come into play at some stage. maybe by the time iPhone 4SXZ is released.
Camera
use the volume buttons to take pics....about bloody time Apple. Access from the lock screen very good idea. Very annoying when you miss a shot because you have to unlock the phone first. Also just incase you were wondering it does work even if you have a passcode. The options now give you a Grid overlay on the screen, so you can pretend you are Robocop. Pinch zoom and lock autofocus/autoexposure. Finding that very useful so far just makes it much more intuitive to use.
Photos
Rotate, Auto Enhance and Red Eye Removal tools finally some editing on the iPhone oh wait Photoshop have already given me that. Never had a photo with red eyes but good to know I can sort it out quickly now. Has been handy to crop and rotate pics to post onto social media sites.
WiFi Sync
Well what can I say....crap. It has been approx 2 hours now and still not completed a SYNC. This is over a Wireless N router nothing but the macbook and iPhone connected to it. Leaving that to one side. My macbook would need to be on and the phone connected to the mains for this function to work. I only ever connect the phones to the mains at night to recharge while I sleep. The macbook is OFF so for me this is just not gonna work I am happy to get the sync over with in a few minutes via the cable thanks. Also what if I want to transfer some photos across from the phone into iPhoto I still have to connect it via the cable.
iCloud
I tried to do a backup to iCloud rather than my computer. Firstly I think they should have an option to backup to iCloud AND your computer. On iTunes the option is to iCloud OR Computer, so I would need to be switching between the 2 each time and backing up twice. This will not be a problem because on my first attempt to backup to iCloud I got a message to say there was not enough space to back up to iCloud. Bang goes that feature for me.
Documents in the cloud yes I do like that feature I can share documents with my iPad easily, wait I do not have an iPad, for those of you that do congrats hope you have a good time with this app.
Apps...when I download an App on my phone my wife gets a message on her iPhone (as we share the same Apple ID) asking if I/She wants to download the App onto her iPhone. This saves me the trouble of making sure I remember to download any great apps I find onto both phones.
Photo stream.....are you crazy so you want me to share my photos onto all my iOS devices. So when I take nude pics of my secretary you want to share those pics onto my iPad at home so that my wife can see them. However if you are not banging your secretary neat feature.
All in all iCloud will really help all the Apple fanboys keep their like, pics, apps, etc organised and have access to them all wherever they are. Start a chat with their pretend girlfriend on the bus as they go taking pictures of the newest apple store on their iPhone 4S. When they then get home the pics will already be on their iPad. They can share them using iMessage with their pretend girlfriend and end the conversation they started on the bus.
Siri
No idea as I have not used it and do not intend to get the 4S. However for all the fanboys just think about it you can find an escort or a brothel wherever you are just by saying "Help me get laid please, and if they would address me as Steve Jobs even better"
These are just my thoughts I am by no means an expert, I may be wrong but I doubt it.
