Hi all,

So an iPhone's Apple ID was changed without reinstalling WhatsApp and the app is tied to the previous account which stops it from updating. As a sanity check before reinstalling WhatsApp, under the new Apple ID, i just want to clarify backups and restoring 'chats' -

Firstly, i assume any new WhatsApp iCloud backups will be under the "new" Apple ID?

Secondly, with regards to WhatsApp backups (it's own backup mechanism through the app), will they be under the "old" Apple ID (as WhatsApp is technically still tied to the previous account) or should they too be backing up under the "new" Apple ID?

Third, when reinstalling WhatsApp and restoring data, i'm assuming WhatsApp uses it's own backups rather than the iCloud backup? And iCloud backups are only used if restoring the entire phone?
This has always been my assumption but i'm getting mixed results when Googling purely around WhatsApp.

Lastly, does anyone know any free software that will backup and restore (only; iTunes will do the entire phone) WhatsApp data?
There's loads of paid/subscription software around but my Google-Fu is failing me on anything free/open source (Github etc) unless it's to extract iTunes backups.

Cheers all :)

Decided to YOLO it and plough ahead making sure i did an iCloud and WhatsApp backup before reinstalling, so to answer my own questions - iCloud WhatsApp backups are under the change/"new" Apple ID (kind of obvious), likewise with WhatsApp (within app) backups even though the app is still tied to the previous ID (i'm confused by this, unless it's purely an App Store thing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯); and WhatsApp does appear to use it's own backups for data restoring rather than iCloud, so i assume the WhatsApp data stored alongside iCloud backups is purely for complete phone restores (can't find anything that 100% confirms this is the case though).

Still, it would be extremely handy to find a free/open source WhatsApp backup and restore though (you have physical access to the local WhatsApp DB file(s) under Android which makes it a piece of cake), so if anyone knows of anything then do post :)
