Ip address conflict?

On one of my computers it says "there is an ip address conflict" and it won't connect to the network. However my router sees it fine as 192.168.0.2, doesn't make sense at all, the pc has a static lan ip address and nothing else is using it. The router shows 7 devices connected to it each with a different ip address and they are all accounted for. Probably just Microsofts failure to program anything correctly.

More likely to be TWO devices with the same IP address and not much to do with Microsoft.

Run IPCONFIG on each PC and see what addresses are in use.

I get this on my wireless when a mate brings round his laptop, for some reason the router assigns his laptop the same IP that my PC uses, I don't know how to fix it either :(

Like I said, there are 7 devices connected that have different ip addresses. They have all been assigned static ip addresses to stop this sort of thing happening, nothing else is connected to the network, so windows must be at fault.

Oh well I have to install a new router and reformat anyway, I may as well just set everything up again then.

Is the PC that gives the message one that has recently had a new network card fitted or a second network card fitted ?

simply turn off dhcp if you're not using it. Make sure there are no wireless laptops active or anything.

assosiate your mac addresses with an ip in your router (think its done in your dhcp on the router) so it gets easier to manage that way in your firewall you can set a range of addressesto allow eg 192.168.0.1-10 thats how i have my config mind you am havin to expeandin etc add your friends when they come etc ....... realy easy =)

then you could hide your ssd and use mac filtering so you dont need to realy bother with wpa or wep etc.......

EDIT: you still should but when am in an area where theres only old people living or noo one realy goes past im not to fussed

You do know that neither of those do anything of any value, so you might as well not bother?

So? The SSID won't be hidden at all either - Vista just shows them, by default. There are plenty of apps for other OSs that'll display "hidden" SSIDs as well.

For the extra hassle adding allowed MAC addresses, you might as well not have bothered.
