IP Address Conflict

I've been having issues with my home network in regards to getting error notification on devices that states 'IP address conflict'. My set up at home includes a Virgin Media superhub which acts as a modem and router, however, this is connected to another ASUS router. This is because the signal does not reach all parts of the house and the ASUS router allows me to use a ASUS repeater that boosts the signal for connectivity around the house.

However, I know get this messages of IP address conflict. I am completely clueless about networking and was wondering if anyone knows how to assign specific IP address ranges for devices to avoid this conflict.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

EDIT: I've tried to put the VM Superhub into 'Modem Only' mode to see if it would help. However, doing this causes no internet connection to come through the ASUS router and repeater at all. :(

My guess is that both your SuperHub and ASUS device have DHCP server's enabled. Double check the DHCP settings on both and disable it on the SuperHub.

You want to turn off DHCP on the Asus router, the superhub will be pumping out the IP addresses, assuming you're connecting devices to that first and foremost, and that the Asus router is for devices further afield.

If you're using the Asus as an access point there should be an AP mode you can select that'll do all of the configuration for you.

Are there any Powerline adapters in use?

I'll try the DHCP suggestions, thanks!

Also, the Asus router is in AP mode but the problem still occurs. And there's no powerline adaters either.

As well as making sure the Asus is in AP mode, make sure it has a different IP address than the superhub. The default for the superhub is 192.168.0.1 (according to the Virgin support page), so change the Asus to something like 192.168.0.2.

I'm still having this issue :(

The ASUS is definitely in AP mode. I thought this had resolved the issue but I'm starting to get the same IP address conflict notification again now.

More details required really.

For example tell us what you're actually using; the full make and model is much more helpful that just saying it's an Asus.

Where are the warnings coming from? Is a windows PC or some other device? Can you tell which IP address is causing the clash?

When do the clashes occur? At random or when a device is powered up/connected to the network?

If can be very helpful to post a drawing of the network configuration with as much detail as possible.

Did you manually set an IP for the Asus? Did you change the IP range in the DHCP server settings on the Virgin SH to make sure it doesn't include the Asus IP, so it can't assign it to a different device?

The ASUS router is a EA-N66 Dual-band. The IP address of the Superhub is the default 192.168.0.1. I haven't manually assigned any ip address on the ASUS so that was just automatically set.

The clashes occur randomly and the error messages pop up on a windows laptop connected via WiFi.

I'm not sure of the ASUS IP address, at work just now so will post that later tonight. I'll try to change the IP range in the DHCP settings to see if that helps.

Also, a Netgear ProSafe 16 port switch is also connected to the router to provide lan connection throughout the house. Not sure if this could be contributing to the problem?

Thanks again guys.

Okay so the IP address on the ASUS is 10.0.1.1. However, if I type ipconfig into command prompt when connected to the ASUS it shows the same IP address as the SuperHub (192.168.0.1). I don't know if this means anything.

I've got a MacBook as well that I can use for testing purposes.

Just to check, is the Asus connected to the Virgin router with a cabled connection?

When you get the clash message on the laptop you should be able to check which address is causing the problem (IPCONFIG).

If you then shut the laptop down you can search for another device on the network that's using that address.

Using ARP from a command prompt is a good place to start. I should tell you what the MAC address is. Once you have the MAC you can lookup the device manufacturer using an online search.

If you set something up to be an AP you would normally set its IP manually (outside of DHCP scope) and not use the WAN interface and that AP would have DHCP turned off. If you do: ipconfig /all on a windows PC that should show the address of the DHCP server (your router).
