Mate thinks someone is getting to his 2 pcs and mac as they know his IP address. Can he ask Virgin to change his ip address?

He said he has cleaned up the PC's but still gets hacked! This has been happening for a year. He even went and bought the mac as he thought it was a Windows problem!

Can he not just reboot the router? Everytime i reboot mine all be it i am with Sky not Virgin i always pickup a different IP address

He has tried everything except getting a new ip addy. He has changed security etc but still he gets hacked!

Unlikely that his external IP is the reason he can be hacked IMO, if he's been compromised whilst having a good firewall prohibiting inbound access to ports, then there are backdoors already installed on the machine(s) quite capable of finding their own way home again - and revealing any new/current IP address in the process of doing so.

IMO anyway, by all means try it, but I wouldn't have high expectations.

This.

Unless he knows what hes doing, which he clearly doesnt, then he isnt going to be able to remove them.
His best bet is a full re-install of both machines, and if hes really parinoid change IP at the same time.

Yes, let's recommend someone who's clearly not very good with PCs to go with Linux, that's a wonderful suggestion.

Anyway, as already mentioned, we need to know why he thinks he's being hacked as it's more than likely that's not the case at all.

He has formatted PC, bought a Mac and still he gets things moved on his pc etc etc. Dont know full facts but he said he cant understand it. Only him and his wife in house, no kids.

So, he has replaced his PC with a Mac and the same thing is happening?

Strangely sounding like a pebkac...

the only way to bypass a nat router is to have client software running on the PC - unless its been configured by someone to allow access

if your friend is powerful, very rich or famous they may have been hacked, by an individual, if he is not he may have a virus HOWEVER a virus will not move a few files....

either a friend in the same house is playing a prank or he / you are making stuff up!

mac and PC, PC reinstalled... his wife is doing it then (assumign no one else has physical access) and assuming he is not installing some remote access software...
