Hi,

Im using Ubuntu 8.04. Ive got a WinXP netbook and am wirelessly networking the two. I can only connect from the netbook to Ubuntu if it has a fixed IP address. However, When I assign an IP to Ubuntu, it keeps changing on each boot!?

On the small taskbar network icon, i click and select manual config, then assign the IP in the network settings. Is there another place to set the IP, or another program that is actually controlling the network?

How about attacking the problem from a different angle? It's usually better, IMO, to set static DHCP in your router so that you never have to set static IP addresses for those machines again, regardless of software.

You could write one in the net.conf file which is somewhere in /etc... (gentoo hand book has a lot on this)

I vote Billy's method provided you can get into your router as its simpler :)

Hmm, ok think i will go for static dhcp from the router. I have a Linksys WRT54GL, anyone happen to know/recommend which new firmware to use as the stock f/w doesnt support it.
