hi guys,
just a quick question, why is it that when i set my server running server 2003 up with a static ip address of 192.168.1.3 there is no internet connection even though i have pointed it to the correct gateway which is my router handling the internet connection.

Now when i tell the server to obtain an ip address automatically the internet works fine????

I have two routers by the way 1 handles DHCP/internet and the other is used as a bridge to connect the server to the network, it runs tomato in wireless bridge mode.

Internet router - 192.168.1.1
Bridge router - 192.168.1.2
Server - 192.168.1.3 (Hopefully-its automatic at the minute)

cheers

what is the subnet mask for that subnet?

what is the DHCP server set to give out in terms of IP address, gateway, subnet mask, dns servers?

you need to set your DNS servers (in the same menu as where you set your IP/default gateway). Your router should tell you which dns servers its connected to OR set your server back to obtain automacially, then do a start > run > cmd > ipconfig/all note down your dns servers then enter them when you set your static IP.

You need to point your server to the DNS servers. Like Gaz1988 said, set your server to obtain the IP address automatically and then Start>Run>cmd>ipconfig /all, note down the DNS server address and then enter them when you set your static IP.

Or you could just set the router (192.168.1.1) as the DNS server, that way if the ones the router pick up automatically change for whatever reason, you don't need to reconfigure them.

seems to have worked when i changed the primary dns server to my routers ip address.

Once again guys thankyou
